A fine patinated bronze figure by Antonin Mercie. With rich brown patina and gilt detail, the base with Hebrew inscription. Signed A Mercie. Foundry stamp" Redeuction Mechanique A. Collas Brevete. Circa 1880.
It depicts the biblical hero David after slaying the giant Goliath. The sculptor Mercie studied in Italy and was influenced by the Renaissance masters.
The bronze was cast by Collas Brevete one of the leading foundries at the time.
